Susan M. Raymond, Director
  • Converted Marching Band Director with experience at the high school, college, and professional level - Tuba player with the National Symphony (Wolf Trap, Washington, D.C.), member of the University of Michigan marching band, show designer for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Marching Band, band director at Castle High School (Kaneohe, HI), and West High School (Salt Lake City, UT), and started out as a tuba player under J. Zuill Bailey at Woodbridge Senior High (Woodbridge, VA),
  • Graduate of Northern Michigan University under the infamous Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser with Graduate Degrees and work from Eastern Michigan University, University of Michigan, University of Hawaii, and University of Utah
  • Founder of Urban Expressions Independent A Winter Guard and West High School's Scholastic Winter Guard Unit

  • Jaycee Clarke, Choreographer - Jaycee has been involved with the Pageantry Arts since 1987 as a performer with such strong organizations as the Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Devils, Fantastia, and BLAST. Jaycee has taken the skills that she developed from these programs and shared them with her students at Alliance Drum and Bugle Corps, Chaparral High School, Mt. Carmel High School, and Prado Independent. She currently adjudicates with SCSBOA, WGASC, and many others throughout the country. While managing to put together a successful color guard program, she managed to obtain a Ph.D degree in Physical Therapy!
  • Joe Paul, Drill Writer - Joe is excited to be joining Urban Expressions for the 2012 season.. After aging out of the Caviliers in 1984, he was a member of the guard staff through 1987. Since then he's had a long and varied engagement with the "marching arts" as a designer, instructor, director and judge. Joe is currently a drill/staging designer for a number of local bands and winter guards. He is a judge for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association and spends the winter season judging for several winter guard circuits around the country. Joe holds a Bachelor's Degree in Art and lives and works in Los Angeles as a freelance graphic designer.
  • Scott Ruiz, Technician - A native of Southern California, and graduated from Adolfo Camarillo High School in 1998. He went on to pursue Marching Band and Drum Corps after high school. Marching with CSUN in 2000-01 and aged out with Oregon Crusaders in 2002 He was also a founding member of the Thousand Oaks, CA based Independent Winter Guard Allusion Performing with them in 2002-2003. The fall of 2003 brought him to the inland empire where he began performing with the Riverside Community College Marching Tigers from 2003-2006. In that time Scott performed in some of the worlds most prestigious pageantry events including the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, Band of America Grand National Championships and the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade. The winter of 2006 brought him to opportunity to perform with Fantasia winter guard which that season they became the 2006 WGI Independent World Class Champion! Scott again joined the ranks of World Class when he decided to return to the winter guard performance arena in 2009 with Diamante..Placing 13th their first year in Independent World. With 10 years experience teaching band and color guard he has taught, choreographed for and consulted many high schools and independent teams across southern California and Utah.
  • Melodie Perry, Technician - A graduate of West Jordan High School, Melodie went on to perform with the Independent World team of Northern Lights. Returning home, Melodie created an IA team, Inspyre, and became the director of Wasatch Academy's UWGA team. Working with UEX for the last 2 years, Melodie brings her experience in musical theatre to us with exceptional skills in teaching.
  • Tony Melancon, Technician - Started in 1978 marching with L'Acadian's Winter Guard from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana for 5 years.  During that time marched with Guardsmen Drum Corps from Schamburg, Illinois.  Has worked with several marching band and color guard programs in Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and California.  Spent 14 years judging with the Winter Guard Association of Southern California, judging in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana and the United Kingdom. 
  • Daniel Smith, Technician - A member of the DCI Caveliers and past member of UEX, Daniel will be joining us again this year as a tech after marhing back east with several world-class winter guards.
 

In memory of:
Sara Raymond, Technician - Founding member of Urban Expressions, Sara started her color guard career in 6th grade as a member of West High School's marching band's guard. She was the director of Riverton High School's color guard programs, an age-out of the DCI Blue Knights, and a member of Corona World Guard until shoulder surgery sidelined her performing career. She also choreographed and taught at American Fork, Grantsville (UWGA Circuit Champions), and Bingham High School (UWGA CircuitChampions). Sara had just graduated from the University of Utah and attained two degrees, one Parks and Recreation/Sports Team Management and the other in Organizational Communications with a dual minor in Business and Coaching. Sara was in New Zealand when she passed at the young age of 25 completing an internship with Opus International.
